McBreen in frame as City boss weighs up transfer options

YORK City boss Colin Walker has not ruled out making a move for former KitKat Crescent favourite Daniel McBreen.

The Minstermen manager could have the former Scunthorpe and St Johnstone striker in his sights, but admitted other names were currently ahead of the 30-year-old on his list of targets.

Walker said he had spoken to five strikers and seven midfield players as he stepped up his bid to strengthen his squad for the next Blue Square Premier campaign.

"You can't just have a Plan A'," he said. "You have to have other options if things don't come to fruition.

"Some of these players are in the league and some in the top five or six in the Conference."

While McBreen is not one of those names currently being considered, Walker has been alerted to the forward's release from St Johnstone and told The Press he was "not ruling anything in or out".

"I only got the information on Friday morning," he added. "The other strikers that I have spoken to are more up the list than he is - but I am not ruling anything in or out."

McBreen impressed during a loan spell at KitKat Crescent earlier in the year and was popular with supporters.

The Australian forward was recalled to Scunthorpe after only a month, but scored against Stafford and Farsley Celtic in his five appearances for York.

Good in the air and adept at holding up the ball and bringing team-mates into play, he recently found the net in St Johnstone's Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Rangers, but was not offered a contract by manager Derek McInnes.

Walker said he hoped to be able to begin announcing City's new arrivals in the very near future.

Get him signed Col. He was a class act for us on loan and would be a great mentor for young Brodie and Sodje.

Would be a great coup, but comments like:
""I only got the information on Friday morning," he added. "The other strikers that I have spoken to are more up the list than he is"

Will not help Col's case in signing anyone, its like saying "your second best mate!"

There is a nice reason to see why I have zero faith in Walker, but McBreen would be a great asset to the Minstermen!

I would love to know who is higher up on the striker list. McBreen is everything the club needs - the only issue being his wages. Though I wonder how much St. Johnstone can afford, so perhaps not as inflated as some might think. His game suited the conference and the club immediately. We really should try for him.

McBreen would be just the kind of signing that would start to get the supporters buzzing for next season. He is the old fashioned target man we so desperately need. It would be very dissapointing if we didn't try to pursue him even if it didn't come off, at least we would have tried. Do yourself and us a big favour Col, get him signed today!

For starters, you don't know who else is on the list so slagging Walker off over this is nonsensical.

McBreen wouldn't be a definite for me either. His injury record the last two years is terrible, and you have to ask serious questions about signing what would be a costly player who may not play half the season.

If there are fit, proven goalscorers available elsewhere, then that's where I'd look.

Nice to see we've considered defence & keeper - the areas we really need to sort - especially as we don't have a "recognised keeper. If CW does not "consider" McBreen immediately, someone else will and I'm sorry to say the fans would never forgive him.

We have questioned CW's influence in bringing in quality players to this club amd DM was quality when he was here. I'd be interested to hear who those ahead of him are....

Imp, you have a valid point - but we have just contracted CF who has had similar problems. I'm a fan of both players personnally!

Walker has answered a Press question, not given up his entire list of targets. He'll be looking for a keeper too, and I'll bet money he already has a shortlist.

I'm not convinced we do need much more in defence.
Another centre-back would be nice, but we have 4 already. I don't actually think our defence suffers from a lack of quality, just organisation and a confident keeper.
A combination of McGurk, Kelly and Parslow, fit, confident and ready to go, could well be enough for this league.

Of course we dont know the names of Walkers main targets, but McBreen would be a superb signing, exactly what we need!

The fact we've contracted Farrell (who to be fair never had problems till the back end of last season and may just need a proper rest) makes a second expensive risk even greater.

I like McBreen and would happily see him back, but also I'm willing to see who Walker wants.
If he announced James Constable or Chris Zebroski next week, I wouldn't care about McBreen at all!

If the York City board and management team had any ambition to get out of this tinpot league they should have put in an offer for McBreen as soon as he became a free agent.

We shouldn't let this opportunity pass as he did well for us during his loan spell. Just a matter of how much his wages would cost.

Got to side with Imp on this one.No question McBreen would be agood asset for us in the BSP.But only an injury free McBreen.

We won't have the squad size to carry injury prone players for months on end.Besides we already have Craig signed on and I am not 100% certain we will get 25 plus games out of him.

I think people are getting a little carried away with McBreen, there will be plenty of quality strikers to become available in the next few weeks. For that reason it seems a shame to waste money on Farrell, who seems to wear down as each season goes on.

I wonder if someone like Jefferson Louis may be in Walker's sights, or Jon Shaw at Halifax. Either way I hope he's also talking to goalkeepers, that is the most important position of all.

reading the name Jon Shaw in Romfordpele'd comment I actually cringed!

Please Colin if you read this, dont think of Shaw, he is rubbish!

Absolutely. Terrible striker, terrible suggestion. Jefferson Louis not up to much either - shortly to have the LFW factor, no doubt.

I'm not saying I'm sold on either, but you wonder if this is the type of player Walker is looking at. We are working to a tight budget remember, meaning some of the names people keep mentioning are out of our price range.

I'm at least encouraged Col says some are league players or in the top six in the Conference. At least his sights are set high. Let's just hope they are convinced by him to sign up.

dont see how it can be said that shaws terrible 17 goals most of which were for halifax a team near bottom of league not a bad return, would prefer mcbreen ideally tough
Posted by: pfycfc95, Acomb, York on 7:35pm Sat 3 May 08
Shaw I can say is crap for the reason that I have seen him play a few times and he is not what we need, we need muscle, that is where we lack. McB has that muscle and ability we need.

As for goals- 17 is a good number but Farrell scored 14 and he to me is not a great striker either. We need a hitman not a poncy Jon Shaw figure!

i agree that mcbreen would be top signing but just think that shaw wouldnt be bad 2nd option if mcbreen wont join

McB and Sodje were outstanding in combo at Woking, arguably one of our best performances. And farrell could play just behind them to do a Peter Beardsley type role. That would leave Brodie as an impact player for the last 20 mins.Great, now that's settled lets get the 'spine' sorted. Strong in the air Keeper to assist current back three and midfield ball winner to feed Wroe,Woolford and Rusk.Wing-backs look ok at this level.Beadle to cover for injuries to defence or midfield. And a few loans to help out now and then. This would mean a very tight squad who crucially know each other from the start which hasn't happened for a few seasons.
