Lifeline hope for York route
A THREATENED bus service loop serving the Holly Bank area of York could be thrown a lifeline, the Liberal Democrats claimed today.
Local campaigner Jon Stott surveyed residents on the existing route of First's number 16 bus - Hamilton Drive, Collingwood Drive and Holly Bank Road - to see whether they would back parking restrictions which would allow the First buses to get through the area without delay.
He said the loop was due to cease this weekend, with First citing delays caused by poor parking and obstruction as the main reason for the change.
He said the survey had revealed that the majority of residents would support a unilateral parking restriction when the bus service was running.
"Clearly most residents in the area treasure the bus service and recognise that easy accessibility is important for elderly and disabled residents. Most properties have off-street parking spaces so during the day inconvenience to car owning local residents should be minimal."
Coun Ann Reid, the council's executive member with responsibility for transport issues said that although it might not be possible to save the loop in the short term, she would be asking officers to conduct a formal consultation as quickly as possible. "If residents support the unilateral restrictions then we will pursue their implementation as quickly as possible."
A First spokesman said: "We have already stated that once traffic measures have been put in place in the Holly Bank area then we will look at resuming the previous service.
"We are now looking forward to providing this new timetable and will continue to monitor its success, as well asm any issues raised, in partnership with the council."

It's a pleasant five minute walk from Holgate Road to Holly Bank. In other news, obesity is still the number one cause of preventable death in the western world, beating both cigarette smoking and buggery. Deaths caused by smoking cannabis? NONE. Zero. Use your cheesebox, light a joint, and enjoy the walk instead of relying on the perto-chemical industry (which also pays for anti-cannabis propaganda). You people make me sick.

Wangy I have read your comments on a couple of stories now and can you please stop being a complete eejit and actually comment about the actual story, and don't bother with any clever remark as I have no interest in it. Please do not allow this service to be saved, it is a complete nightmare going through Holly Bank on a bike or in a car when a bus comes towards you. The streets seem barely built to cope with cars never mind buses.

Whilst been an advocate of alternative transport I find that by far the biggest threat to the pushbike is the bus. Only about 7% of journeys to work are made by bus whilst three times that number use a push-bike.

A good point. Whilst been an advocate of alternative transport I find that by far the biggest threat to the pushbike is the bus. Only about 7% of journeys to work are made by bus whilst three times that number use a push-bike.

Any what about the elderly or ill for whom a 'pleasant 5 minute walk' is too much? Or when it is raining, or you have a large amount of shopping with you? Keep your ill-thought out views to yourself in future.

It sounds like te same situation as winsor garth with buses having trouble getting round the narrow roads,parking restrictions will make things difficult for residents /visitors,first seem to want the council to clear as many streets as poss of cars to aid their journey times,if vehicles are causing an obstruction why not have a hot line the bus driver can ring and enforcement team sent to remove the offending vehicles ,use the traffic laws that are all ready there irresponsable drivers will soon get the message.
