Bus fares to go up

PARK & Ride bus fares in York are to rise by 15 per cent in the wake of soaring diesel costs.

The price of an adult return ticket will increase from £2 to £2.30, while an annual ticket is going up from £300 to £350.

Bus operator First said today that the increase – the first in three years – was in response to recent dramatic rises in the price of fuel, which had doubled since January 2007 and more than quadrupled since 2002.

The fare rise, which comes into effect on Sunday, August 3, will hit almost four million passenger journeys used to travel into and out of the city centre each year.

But First said that passengers on its standard services in the city will escape any rise – at least for the time being.

A spokesman said: “At this stage, there are no plans to raise fares on standard services in the near future.”

Managing director Richard Eames spoke of his regrets at the announcement, which was being made following consultation with City of York Council.

“First has for some time continued to absorb additional operating costs so that our customers are not directly affected,” he said.

“However, in light of the escalating increases in fuel and other operating costs, we have reluctantly decided to increase the price of fares.

“We appreciate that nobody likes it when prices go up and we have worked hard to keep them to a minimum. “However, as the cost of filling up at the petrol station has gone up – diesel is now £6 a gallon for the motorist – we believe our fares are still extremely competitive.

“It is also important to note that this is the first time an adult return ticket has gone up for three years and has risen considerably less, in percentage terms, than the rise in costs to our business, particularly the cost of fuel, over the same period of time.

Damon Copperthwaite, assistant director for City Development and Transport at the council, said he was disappointed it had been necessary to increase fares.

“But we have managed to keep the increase down to less than operating cost inflation over the last three years,” he said.

“Park&Ride bus services will still be good value for money for visitors and commuters when compared with the alternative of using their cars.”

Are the locals of York supposed to feel grateful to FarceYork? How many price increases have they had to put up with in those 3 years? Is it 4, 5 or 6???

The monthly Park & Ride card increased from £25 to £30, think it was last year.

I don't care, because I wouldn't let any of First's psychopathic drivers take me anywhere ever. First will never get a penny of my money as long as they continue to put ape-like lunatics at the wheel of their buses.

I only said this last week that they would rise the prices - despite large rises in passenger numbers.

just an excuse to make more money.

Everyone watch that when oil prices do drop..the fares won't.

Both the monthly and stored value passes went up in August last year by something like 20%.

Also, I was led to believe that First were able to fix the price they paid for fuel over a long period in advance - so they shouldn't be affected by the recent rises.

Profiteering monopoly at work.

It is no surprise that fares have gone up. But to me park and ride should do exactly as it says, pick up at the park and ride site and set down in the city centre and not stop along the way to pick other passengers up.

Too Rad- Are you volunteering to do the job? What is YOUR driving like?
Don't tar ALL drivers with the same brush! I have never had any complaints about my driving..only compliments. This is because I treat my passengers the way *I* would want to be treated!
Yes, the monthly cards went up last year..but not the normal fares.
What the press fail to mention about these huge rises in passengers is that MOST of them are concession passengers. They don't pay! Well, the COUNCIL pays for them. They get on and ride one stop and each time they do ride the council has to pay 70p. The Press also failed to mention that the council are presuring us for fare rises..well they've got to make some of that $400,000 back SOMEHOW eh?
Little Bob..Every park and Ride driver will agree with you on this. The idea of P&R was that you park out of town and ride in. A quick service NOT hindered by loads of stops. Take the seven (Designer Outlet) service, thats not a park and ride anymore!..it's like a city service. When I started driving that route it had two stops. Now, because it stops all the way in and out of town..we drivers have the embarrassment of leaving people because we're full. And what do we get? Sworn at, spat at and general abuse all round.

Before you all start hurling abuse at us drivers, just think about this. WE don't set the fares! WE don't set the routes and WE don't set the TIMES we run!

Well then it's your responsibility to weed out your bad colleagues. If you're so good then bravo.
I bet when you were on a break recently you overheard some colleagues telling some funny anecdote about how they fkd over some hapless idiot who got in their way. You either laughed with them or you felt uncomfortable.

I don't care about the price of a fare or being late or the setting of routes, I've only ever seen the behaviour and that speaks for itself.

First are only doing what all the other transport service providers are doing.

First had a real oppurtunity here. If they had dropped prices by say 10p a journey, in the current climate, it would have been amazing publicity and encouraged people to use buses more. It is more expensive for me to travel by bus than it is by car, even with city centre parking taken into account.

I use the Arriva service at the Designer Outlet, its only £2 return so will be cheaper come August. Also I find the drivers alot nicer.

I was recently thrown off a First York bus because I complained the driver was smoking on the bus! This is how much they think of their customers.
