FLIGHTS to top European destinations, the chance to train like an RAF pilot and a VIP day at Yorkshire’s premier racecourse are among the prizes waiting to be won at The Press charity golf tournament.

The Press Golf Day is now in its third year of raising funds for the Guardian Angels Appeal and with only £20,000 to go before we reach the £300,000 target, the golf day could be the event which achieves the goal.

This year the prizes are better than ever.

Low-cost airline Jet2, which operates out of Leeds Bradford Airport, flying to almost 40 holiday and business destinations, is supporting the event with an offer of two free return flights to a choice of three destinations.

Whoever scoops the prize could be enjoying the delights of Geneva, tasting tapas in Barcelona or walking among the tulips of Amsterdam.

Another top prize has been donated by RAF Linton-on-Ouse which is providing a tour for four people of its air base. A tour of air traffic control, the radar room and the Tucano training aircraft are all on offer, but best of all, winners will take the controls of the base’s flight simulator.

Winners will learn to take-off, loop-the-loop and fly in night-time conditions in the state-of-the-art simulator.

Last, but by no means least, York Racecourse has agreed to provide eight VIP tickets to the first day of next year’s May Festival.

Regarded as the top racecourse in the north, the lucky winners will be at Knavesmire for the first time since the renovation of the track and will witness the principal trial for the Epsom Oakes, the Musidora Stakes.

On top of these, York City Football Club has offered free tickets to a game, top restaurant group Jinnah has donated free meals at its Indian and Italian restaurants and Sandburn Hall Golf Club, which is hosting the competition, is providing free rounds of golf and branded clothing.

The National Railway Museum has provided VIP passes for the Yorkshire Wheel, and there are prizes of return tickets to London or Edinburgh provided by National Express on the East Coast Mainline.

The event takes place on Friday, September 19 and will tee off from about 9.30am, with a two-tee start for teams between 10am and noon.

The prize-giving ceremony is expected to start at about 6pm. Entry costs £200 for a team of four.

To enter fill in the form and send it to Richard Harris, editorial department, The Press, Newsquest (York), 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN, with a cheque made payable to The Press Guardian Angels Appeal.
