A POPULAR teacher has a chance to show he is top of the class in The Press’s Community Pride Awards.
Peter Heale, a teacher at Lord Deramore’s Primary School, in Heslington, York, has been put forward in the Teacher Of The Year category of the awards, run in conjunction with City Of York Council, for his enthusiasm and commitment.
Sasa Fouladi-Pour, a Year 6 pupil at the school, said Mr Heale is a “one-in-a-million” teacher who always has time to help pupils.
The 11-year-old and his mother, Fiona Kent, nominated Mr Heale for the award.
Fiona said: “Very rarely do you come across a teacher who never needs to shout, wag a finger or give a glare. Mr Heale has a smile that comes very easily to his face, he is kind but firm, and has an open and friendly manner.
“If someone needs to ask him a question, they know they will be dealt with kindly. Children respond to him with respect and increased learning. Sasa and all his class have had the fortune to have Mr Heale to teach them for all of Year 4 and he helps to teach Years 5 and 6.
“Those who could hardly read begin to read, those who used to dread going to school want to go each day, and those who were so bored they mucked around sit up and listen.
“A troubled child feels reassured because they can ‘talk to Mr Heale’ about their personal troubles and worries because he always makes them feel better.”
When asked how he felt about being nominated, Mr Heale said he was “stunned”. “I am absolutely delighted,” he said. “I don’t know if I really deserve it but I am very pleased about being nominated.”
