Spirit of Youth
Sophie Myers, 16, juggles her school studies while giving up hours each week to help adults with learning disabilities.
Alex Mills, 18, was nominated by his mother, Pamela, for the help and care he has given to her since she fell ill with ME.
Madeleine Leftwich, 17, who was told by doctors she would never walk again after a diving accident, has swum the length of the English Channel for charity

Public Sector Hero
Jim Lynch, 63, has been the caretaker of Tang Hall Community Centre for nine years, and was put forward by local councillor Roger Pierce.
Guy Fowler has been an estate worker in Clifton for more than two years and has been put forward for providing residents with a first-class service.
Vicky Fuggles, of Wains Road, Dringhouses, has spent the past two years dedicating her time to develop activities in the Chapefields area, including organising youth clubs, voluntary and community groups.

Charity Fundraiser of the Year
Maddie Cook was put forward by dad Chris, the survivor of a terrifying cherry picker accident in York, after she helped raise cash through fundraising for the charity which helped her dad.
Alan Barker organised a 24-hour charity pool tournament in March this year for the York Cancer Care Centre, despite being terminally ill himself with cancer.
Peter Gorbet has has raised thousands of pounds for charities including Arclight, Meningitis UK, the Anthony Nolan Trust, a breast cancer charity and Kidscan.

Child of the Year
Ella Ferrebee, of Acomb, York, has fought a rare form of childhood cancer since she was diagnosed at only ten months of age.
Ellie Dickenson has fought a two-year battle against cancer. Only two weeks after her first birthday in June 2005, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Ten-year old Joseph Hadden suffers from Type I diabetes and twice in the past year his condition has left him on the brink of death.

Volunteer of the Year
Joan Cawood works at OCAY and has been nominated for her help working for the charity despite being blind, suffering from arthritis and Parkinson’s disease.
Colm O’Rouke works at York CVS and dedicates hours of his spare time to the promotion of volunteering and youth action in York.
Dennis Hargreaves organises the distribution of the parish newspaper “The Outlook”, masterminded the interior rebuild of Haxby Methodist Church, and carries out work in the Church garden.

Teacher of the Year
Peter Heale, a teacher at Lord Deramore’s Primary School, Heslington, York, has been forward for his enthusiasm and commitment.
Carole Farrar, of New Earswick Primary School, has been nominated for the endless projects she has introduced at the school.
Mark Barnett, head teacher of Westfield Community Primary School, has been praised for his commitment to his school and implementing such initiatives as Tea and Tunes for the elderly and introducing healthy eating at the school.

Health Service Hero
Retired state nurse Ann Harrison has been put forward for the award for the sterling support she has given to patients across York.
Cool-headed York-based call-room operator Charlotte Wright has been nominated for her help resuscitating a woman who had choked on a sandwich.
Martin Chappelow, who works as a care worker for the health trust has been nominated by for his extra commitment to the job. His day job includes visiting people with dementia but he also set up a woodwork shop for patients and also organised an allotment.

Sporting Hero
Rugby league stalwart Spen Allison has been put forward for the award for dedicating half a century of his life helping a local rugby league.
Yorkshire county bowling coach Ian Farrar, of Melton Avenue, Clifton, has tirelessly helped youngsters with an interest in bowling.
Karate hero Liam O’Grady has been practising the sport for 18 years, representing England at national level for seven years.

Person of the Year
Lollipop lady Joyce Donkin has helped thousands of York’s schoolchildren safely across busy roads for more than 33 years.
David Papworth was nominated for his work at Carlton House. He gives his own time and money to cultivating the gardens and is also the driving force behind the active local residents association
Although David Kitchen, 19, suffers from cystic fibrosis, he was among 33,000 fellow competitors who took part in this year’s London Marathon. Despite his lung condition, David managed to complete the 26-mile race in less than four hours.

Parent of the Year
Sheila Marson has spent six years looking after a 23-year-old man with autism, a 35-year-old man with Downs Syndrome and a 40-year-old woman with cerebral palsy and epilepsy while looking after her own children and grandchildren.
Dawn Stagnell, the mother of rugby player Liam, whose future was shattered in a car crash, has been nominated for being an inspiration through the eight weeks she spent by Liam’s bedside.
Coral Magson is currently in St Leonard's Hospice suffering from bowel cancer but despite her health problems is a “fabulous” parent to her two children and grandparent to her five grandchildren.

Service with a Smile
Dr Robert Grabowski, of the Crystal Clear Dental Spa, in York, has been nominated for the award for the care he gives to both his customers and his staff.
Ghulam Rabbani, who works at Londis in Haxby Road, has been nominated by Coun David Scott. Before working in Londis, Mr Rabbani was a postmaster in Haxby Road for 18 years.
Mount News, Holgate Road, York, has been chosen as a finalist for the exceptional and personal service it has provided the local community.

Best Community Project
Space 109, based in Walmgate, led by artist Joanne Pullar, provides somewhere for local residents, young and old, to meet and take part in art, craft and drama workshops.
Jeannette Bannister, of Third Avenue, Heworth, York, has run a fortnightly Saturday craft club in Heworth Church Hall since January this year.
Skelton junior football club committee is made up of local parents who wanted to give the youngsters something to do at night. In just three years they have achieved Charter Standard.

Best Primary School project
Children at New Earswick Primary School are taking part in a pupil volunteering scheme. Youngsters help out through fundraising for charity, volunteering inside the school, such as helping out in the school cafeteria and through being on the board of the specially-elected school volunteering committee.
Rufforth Primary School is tackling obesity problems by growing its own fresh produce.
Pupils at St Barnabas’ CE Primary School, in the Leeman Road area of York, are keeping three chickens, Dolly, Sally and Harley, to learn about sustainable communities

Best Secondary School or Higher Education Project
A group of schoolboys who are putting the attitude back into dance have been nominated for the award. The team from York’s All Saints’ RC School who have scooped a top national title for break-dancing.
Pupils and staff from St Peter’s School have been put forward for transforming one of the main courtyards at York hospital
Pupils at Joseph Rowntree School helped revamp an area of the school.
